Onion Paper

May 1st:
I lost a few days of time. Work and the rush of letting people know about Lucy’s pregnancy and life just sort of swept me away. I almost let myself forget about Alex and Misty and the fucking craziness.
Except, throughout I heard that strange knocking whenever I was alone. Endless banging, generally limited to groups of soft raps. It was almost like someone tapping out a message, but it could have been anything from SOS to “shave and a haircut, two bits” for all I could decipher. When things calmed down, with Lucy doing some weekend thing with her girlfriends, I settled in for more of my brother’s notes. It was just habit surfacing, I should have just relaxed and enjoyed my time.
No sign of my brother’s handwriting remained. All of the ink had assumed its new state, including soaking in to the few blank pages in order to keep the message going.
I read the whole thing, stopping briefly to order a pizza that I scarfed it down while I read the rest. The tricks in the book, I shouldn’t try them. I can’t be sure they won’t work, and I have so much to think about now.
Except, the promise of them. God, I can see why Alex would jump straight in to this.
